Body camera footage released by police shows a dramatic rescue carried out by two deputies from the Cortland Police Department after responding to reports of a vehicle fire. Upon arrival, officers discovered a car that had crashed through a fence, overturned onto its side, and become fully engulfed in flames.
The video captures one deputy acting immediately, climbing onto the burning vehicle and breaking through the sunroof to reach the trapped driver. As flames intensified, the officer managed to pull the man free and move him away from the wreckage moments before the fire spread further.
At the same time, a second deputy can be seen deploying a fire extinguisher in an effort to slow the flames and prevent the situation from becoming even more dangerous. Their coordinated response helped buy critical seconds that ultimately saved the driver’s life.
Police said the driver sustained serious injuries and was transported for medical treatment. One of the deputies involved in the rescue was also treated for minor injuries sustained during the operation.
Officials praised the deputies’ decisive actions under extreme conditions, noting that the outcome could have been far worse without their rapid response. The incident highlights the risks law enforcement officers face daily and the split-second decisions that can mean the difference between life and death.
