President Donald Trump sharply criticized European NATO members for continuing to purchase oil from Russia, warning that such actions weaken the impact of Western sanctions.
“Europe is buying oil from Russia. I don’t want them to buy oil — and the sanctions that they’re putting on are not tough enough. I’m willing to do sanctions, but they’re going to have to toughen up their sanctions commensurate with what I’m doing,” Trump said.
His comments reflect ongoing frustration with European allies, whom he has frequently accused of not doing enough to confront Moscow over its war in Ukraine. By urging Europe to halt Russian oil imports, Trump underscored his broader strategy of pushing NATO partners to adopt tougher measures aligned with U.S. policy.
The remarks also come as Washington considers expanding its sanctions framework, signaling Trump’s readiness to escalate economic pressure on Russia if allies fail to match American efforts.
