U.S. Southern Command has released dramatic video footage showing the pre-dawn boarding and capture of the stateless oil tanker Olina in the Caribbean Sea, underscoring an aggressive enforcement posture against illicit oil trafficking networks that bankroll hostile regimes and criminal enterprises.

The operation, conducted on January 9, 2026, involved coordinated U.S. Coast Guard and Marine personnel who secured the 21-year-old crude oil carrier without resistance. Thermal and onboard footage shows U.S. forces taking control of the vessel in darkness, a precision maneuver highlighting the professionalism and readiness of American maritime forces.

According to U.S. officials, the Olina is part of a so-called “shadow fleet” designed to evade U.S. sanctions on Venezuelan oil exports. The tanker was transferred in July 2025 to a web of Hong Kong–based shell companies, a common tactic used to conceal ownership, falsify documentation, and bypass international enforcement mechanisms. Since 2023, these networks have shipped more than one million barrels of oil per month, generating revenue that directly supports the Maduro regime.

This seizure marks the fifth interdiction of a sanctions-violating vessel in recent weeks, signaling a significant escalation in U.S. maritime enforcement. Renewed sanctions and expanded interdiction authorities are disrupting illicit shipping corridors that not only fund Venezuela’s authoritarian government, but also intersect with networks tied to Iran and Russia.

U.S. officials note that these same maritime routes have been exploited for transnational crime, including fentanyl trafficking linked to cartel operations that threaten American communities. By targeting the logistical backbone of these operations at sea, the United States is applying pressure far beyond traditional diplomatic channels.

The release of the SOUTHCOM video serves both as documentation and deterrence. It sends a clear message that U.S. sanctions will be enforced, shell companies will not provide cover, and the oceans will not serve as safe havens for those undermining international security.

As enforcement actions continue, the seizure of the Olina stands as a visible example of renewed resolve to defend U.S. interests, uphold sanctions law, and dismantle the shadow economies that empower adversarial regimes.
