An early morning beach outing turned into an unforgettable spectacle in Newport Beach, California, after a juvenile great white shark launched itself out of the water just yards from a boogie boarder. The dramatic breach unfolded around 6:30 a.m. on July 25 near Lifeguard Tower 40, catching everyone off guard, including the man filming the moment, who had simply been recording his brother catching waves before an entirely different star crashed the scene. The resulting footage, showing the shark's full body clearing the surface in a burst of spray, quickly spread across social media, drawing a mix of amazement, nervous laughter, and pointed questions about just how close the animal really came to the swimmer.

Shark experts were quick to offer some reassurance along with the excitement. Christopher Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach, confirmed the animal was a young great white and explained the leap was almost certainly the shark's way of shaking off parasites, or as he memorably put it, relieving a case of the itchies. Despite the shark's close proximity to the boarder, nobody was hurt, and local lifeguards made the call to keep the beaches open, a decision consistent with the fact that juvenile great whites, while undeniably intimidating in appearance, pose a relatively low risk to swimmers in these waters.
