U.S. forces stationed in northern Iraq successfully intercepted an incoming drone over the city of Erbil using a C-RAM air defense system, preventing what officials believe was part of a coordinated attack targeting American facilities in the region. The interception occurred on the night of March 3, 2026, near Erbil International Airport, where U.S. personnel operate alongside coalition partners.

Footage captured during the incident shows bright red tracer rounds streaking across the night sky as the Close-In Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar (C-RAM) defense system engaged the incoming threat. Within seconds, the system successfully destroyed the drone before it could reach its intended target. The dramatic footage illuminated the skyline above Erbil as the defensive system fired bursts of 20mm rounds at extremely high speed.

According to multiple reports, the drone was believed to be a one-way attack drone similar to those frequently used by Iranian-aligned forces across the Middle East. The attempted strike appears to have been aimed at American positions in Erbil, including the U.S. consulate compound and a nearby airbase that houses coalition forces. Despite the attempted attack, officials confirmed that no casualties were reported and that the drone was neutralized before causing any damage.

The C-RAM system used in the interception is an advanced land-based adaptation of the U.S. Navy’s Phalanx Close-In Weapon System. Designed specifically to protect bases from incoming rockets, artillery, mortar rounds, and drones, the system uses a rapid-fire 20mm Gatling cannon capable of firing roughly 4,500 rounds per minute. Its radar and tracking systems automatically detect incoming threats and calculate firing solutions within seconds, making it one of the most effective last-line defensive systems deployed to protect forward operating bases.

Military analysts say the interception demonstrates the importance of layered air defense in regions where drone warfare has become increasingly common. Low-flying attack drones present a unique challenge due to their relatively small size and ability to evade traditional radar detection. Systems like C-RAM are specifically designed to counter these threats at close range when other defensive layers may not engage in time.

The attempted strike in Erbil comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran following ongoing U.S.-Israeli operations targeting Iranian military and energy infrastructure. In response to those strikes, Iranian-aligned groups across the region have been suspected of launching retaliatory drone and rocket attacks against American and allied positions.

For U.S. forces stationed in Iraq and across the broader Middle East, the successful interception highlights the readiness of base defense systems and the effectiveness of modern counter-drone technology. By neutralizing the incoming threat before it reached populated or strategic areas, the defensive response ensured the protection of both military personnel and nearby civilian infrastructure.

As regional tensions continue to rise, American commanders remain on high alert for further drone or missile threats. Incidents like the one over Erbil underscore the evolving nature of modern warfare, where rapid detection and precision defensive systems play a critical role in safeguarding personnel and strategic facilities.
