A suspected shoplifter in Bury learned the hard way that timing is everything when he fled straight into the path of Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson — and was swiftly detained.
According to GMP, officers were pursuing the suspect on foot after a reported theft from a local store when the chase took an unexpected turn near the Sedgley Park training centre. Sir Stephen Watson, who was at the facility to welcome a new group of officers during a passing out parade, spotted the commotion and moved to intercept the fleeing man.
Body-worn footage released by GMP shows the chief constable holding the suspect as uniformed officers arrived to complete the arrest. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
Police confirmed that two other individuals — a man and a woman — were also detained nearby in connection with the alleged theft, during which a store security guard was reportedly assaulted.
In a statement, a GMP spokesman praised Sir Stephen’s quick thinking and decisive action, saying it demonstrated “true leadership and commitment to the principles of policing.” Witnesses described the moment as both surprising and symbolic — a police chief quite literally stepping in to enforce the law alongside his officers.
The incident has since garnered widespread attention online, with many applauding the chief constable’s hands-on response. As investigations continue, police confirmed that the suspects remain in custody while inquiries are ongoing.
