WASHINGTON — Secretary Sean Duffy announced sweeping new measures aimed at boosting roadway safety, unveiling an emergency rule that will immediately overhaul eligibility standards for non-domiciled Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs).

The rule, effective immediately, targets states’ CDL programs and is intended to ensure stricter compliance with federal safety standards. In his announcement, Duffy delivered a sharp warning to state governments: “Get into compliance NOW — or we’ll pull funding and we’ll force you into compliance.”

The move reflects the administration’s push to tighten oversight on commercial drivers and reduce risks on U.S. highways. The Department of Transportation has not yet released full details of the rule, but officials indicated that states will face swift consequences if they fail to align with the updated requirements.

The announcement is expected to generate debate among state regulators, trucking associations, and highway safety advocates, as it marks one of the most aggressive federal interventions in CDL licensing in recent years.
