NEW YORK — An off-duty NYPD officer was ambushed in Washington Heights late Sunday night, leading to a deadly confrontation that left one man dead and another suspect on the run.
According to police, the officer was approached by two men in what appeared to be a planned attack. One of the suspects, armed with a weapon, confronted the officer, who returned fire, fatally striking him. The second suspect fled the scene and remains at large.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved. The officer, who was not injured, immediately reported the incident and is cooperating with the investigation.
The NYPD said an intensive search is underway for the second suspect. Police Commissioner Edward Caban stated that the department will “not tolerate violent ambushes on our officers, whether on or off duty.”
The shooting has heightened concerns about gun violence and targeted attacks against law enforcement in the city.
