Shocking new surveillance footage shows a hammer-wielding arsonist breaking into the Pennsylvania Governor’s residence and setting multiple fires with Molotov cocktails during a late-night attack earlier this year.

The footage, released by District Attorney Fran Chardo, captures the moment Cody Balmer smashed a window and hurled flaming bottles into the home of Governor Josh Shapiro on April 13, 2025. Balmer then entered the residence, attempting to break down interior doors and ignite more fires while 22 people — including the governor and his family — were asleep inside.

Balmer has since pleaded guilty to a series of serious charges, including attempted murder, terrorism, and arson, and now faces up to 50 years in prison.

According to prosecutors, Balmer told investigators that his motive was tied to Governor Shapiro’s support for Israel’s military response following the October 7 attacks. The incident has been widely condemned as an act of political violence and domestic terrorism, sparking renewed discussions about threats against public officials.

Governor Shapiro and his family escaped unharmed, thanks to the quick response of security and emergency personnel who contained the fire before it spread further.
