Douglas County deputies safely took a stolen-vehicle suspect into custody last month after using advanced law enforcement technology to stop the car before a dangerous pursuit could begin.

Deputies initially received a Flock Safety automated license plate reader alert identifying a stolen vehicle in the area. While canvassing nearby streets, officers quickly located the vehicle parked at a gas station near Chambers Road and Belford Avenue.

As the vehicle left the parking lot, a deputy equipped with the Grappler system followed and successfully deployed the device. The Grappler, which uses a net to entangle a vehicle’s tires, brought the car to a controlled stop before a pursuit could develop, significantly reducing risk to the public and officers.

After the stop, the driver refused to comply with commands and remained inside the vehicle, prompting the response of the Douglas County Regional SWAT Team. Upon SWAT’s arrival, the suspect complied and was taken into custody without further incident or injury.

The driver was arrested on charges of Motor Vehicle Theft in the Second Degree, a felony, and Obstructing a Peace Officer, a misdemeanor.

Body camera footage from the incident shows the Grappler device engaging the vehicle’s tires and officers methodically securing the scene. The operation highlights how tools like Flock alerts and Grappler systems are increasingly being used to safely resolve stolen vehicle cases while avoiding high-speed pursuits.

Officials praised the coordinated response, emphasizing that the incident demonstrates a strong commitment to public safety and responsible policing.
