Speaking publicly after announcing the end of his re-election campaign, Walz accused conservative YouTubers of fueling hysteria and falsely portraying wrongdoing, claiming they were “breaking into daycares” and spreading conspiracies. He further alleged that President Trump had unfairly demonized Minnesota’s Somali community and wrongfully confiscated funds, calling the rhetoric “disgusting and dangerous.”

The remarks come amid a sprawling fraud scandal involving Minnesota’s child care and food assistance programs. Independent journalist Nick Shirley drew national attention to the issue in December 2025 through a documentary that highlighted licensed daycare centers allegedly receiving millions of dollars despite appearing inactive or nonexistent. Shirley has publicly claimed his reporting intensified scrutiny of Walz’s administration and contributed to the governor’s decision to step aside.

Critics argue that Walz’s response avoids addressing systemic failures in oversight and accountability, instead reframing the scandal as politically motivated.
