Israel recorded its first fatal terror attack of 2026 after a deadly shooting spree in the Kochav Ya'ir area left a 35-year-old civilian dead and five others wounded. According to reports from the scene, the attacker, an Arab-Israeli man from Tayibe, used a vehicle with Israeli license plates to move between multiple locations, opening fire at a gas station, a McDonald's restaurant area, and locations near Tzur Natan and Sal'it before being confronted by security forces.

The attack triggered a large-scale security operation as police, military units, and helicopters were deployed throughout the region near the Green Line. Witnesses described scenes of panic as authorities rushed to secure multiple crime scenes, treat victims, and search for any potential accomplices connected to the attack.

Security forces later located and killed the gunman, bringing the immediate threat to an end. Authorities also reportedly arrested a second suspect from Tayibe as part of the ongoing investigation. The attack has renewed concerns over terrorism inside Israel's borders, with security analysts warning that attacks carried out by individuals operating independently can be especially difficult to detect and prevent before violence occurs.
