President Donald Trump announced that his administration has deployed a major federal law enforcement surge into Washington, D.C., in response to what he calls an “out-of-control crime wave” in the nation’s capital.

“Last week, my Administration surged 500 federal agents into the District, including from the FBI, ATF, DEA, Park Police, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Secret Service, and the Department of Homeland Security,” Trump said. “They made dozens of arrests.”

The president framed the move as a direct countermeasure to what he described as the city’s permissive policies toward criminal activity, blasting D.C.’s leadership as “radical left” and accusing them of creating a “sanctuary jurisdiction… sanctuary for criminals.”

Trump’s remarks follow his earlier declaration that he would invoke the D.C. Home Rule Act to place the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control, a decision that has already sparked intense political debate over local governance, law enforcement authority, and the balance of power between federal and municipal oversight.
