WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump described his recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin as “very good,” while stressing that real progress will depend on reaching a concrete agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
“We had a very good meeting today but we’ll see — you have to get a deal,” Trump told reporters. “We agreed on a lot of points. I want to see people stop dying in Ukraine... If we can end that war it would be very good.”
The remarks came after Trump’s high-profile summit with Putin in Alaska, where both leaders expressed a shared interest in moving toward peace but fell short of securing an immediate breakthrough.
Trump’s comments highlight his administration’s intent to position the U.S. as a key mediator in the conflict, even as major differences remain between Washington, Moscow, and Kyiv over how peace should be achieved.
The president is scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington on Monday, a move analysts say could help balance U.S. outreach to both sides of the war.
Despite the lack of an agreement, Trump emphasized optimism, signaling that the talks with Putin may pave the way for further negotiations. “If we can stop the bloodshed, it will be worth it,” he said.
