The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced an expanded phase of ground operations in Gaza City, which it described as the central hub of Hamas’ military and governing power.

IDF Spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin said Hamas has entrenched itself in the city, turning it into “the largest human shield in history.” He emphasized that Gaza City remains the group’s main stronghold, combining military infrastructure with civilian areas to complicate Israel’s operations.

As operations intensify, Israel continues urging civilians in Gaza to move south to safer areas. BG Defrin reaffirmed that rescuing hostages remains a top priority while also stressing the IDF’s mission: “Our purpose is to preserve the State of Israel, to protect its independence, and to stop its enemies from disrupting everyday life for Israel’s citizens and residents.”

The expansion of ground activity marks a significant escalation in the conflict, underscoring Israel’s determination to dismantle Hamas’ stronghold in Gaza City.
