Syrian interim president Jolani addressed questions regarding his connection to the September 11 attacks, emphasizing that he had no involvement and was only 19 years old at the time.
“I was only 19 years old, I was a very young person. And I didn't have any decision-making power at that time,” Jolani said. “And al-Qaeda was not present right then in my area. So, you're speaking to the wrong person about this subject.”
Jolani also expressed condolences for the victims of the attacks and the ongoing suffering caused by war. “We mourn for every civilian that got killed and we know that people suffer from the war,” he added.
The remarks come amid continued scrutiny of Middle Eastern leaders and their historical connections to terrorist organizations. Jolani’s statement highlights his attempt to distance himself from events that occurred during his youth, while acknowledging the broader human toll of conflict in the region.
Political analysts note that such statements serve both as personal clarifications and diplomatic messaging, reinforcing a leader’s commitment to civilian welfare while addressing sensitive historical questions.
