A 26-year-old surfer was safely rescued after being swept approximately a quarter-mile offshore at Haskell’s Beach in Santa Barbara County, thanks to quick action by his friend and innovative drone technology. The incident occurred during a High Surf Advisory warning of 10-12 foot waves along local beaches.

After losing his board, the surfer clung to a lobster trap buoy while waiting for help. His friend immediately reported him missing, prompting Santa Barbara County Fire Department personnel to launch a search. Firefighters first located the washed-up surfboard on the shore, confirming the situation, before deploying aerial drones equipped with infrared cameras to scan the ocean. The drones quickly spotted the surfer, allowing rescue swimmers to reach him under real-time guidance and bring him safely back to shore.

Once on the beach, firefighter-paramedics evaluated the surfer, who did not require medical attention and was released on the scene. Authorities credited the rescue to the combined efforts of the quick-thinking friend, the county’s dedicated fire teams, and the life-saving capabilities of drone technology.

The incident highlights both the dangers posed by high surf conditions and the growing role of technology in enhancing maritime rescues, ensuring quick response times and improved safety for beachgoers.
