A violent overnight exchange of gunfire in Columbia, South Carolina unfolded after police responded to multiple shots-fired calls in a residential neighborhood, resulting in at least one suspect being killed and extensive property damage. The confrontation erupted in the Summit Ridge area, where vehicles and homes were struck during what officials described as a sustained barrage of gunfire.
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 12:17 a.m. and again at approximately 1:51 a.m., encountering what investigators believe involved multiple armed suspects. One 18-year-old, identified as Qwa’Maurie Deaver, was killed during the exchange, while another suspect was detained as authorities continued to investigate the involvement of additional individuals.
Sheriff Leon Lott released bodycam footage showing officers returning fire under heavy attack, with officials noting that as many as ten individuals may have been involved in the incident. Despite the intensity of the shootout, law enforcement reported no injuries among responding officers, while emphasizing the ongoing investigation into what they described as a rapidly escalating and highly dangerous confrontation.
