TAMPA, FL — What began as a reckless street race ended in tragedy early Saturday morning when 22-year-old Silas Sampson lost control of his speeding vehicle, plowing into a crowd of pedestrians outside Bradley’s on 7th in Tampa’s Ybor City. The horrific crash killed four adults and left 11 others injured in one of the deadliest incidents the historic district has seen in years.
According to authorities, Tampa Police officers first spotted Sampson racing another vehicle along Hillsborough Avenue shortly after midnight on November 8, 2025. The Florida Highway Patrol attempted a pursuit and initiated a PIT maneuver near Nebraska and Palm Avenues but called off the chase moments before the fatal crash, citing public safety concerns. Within minutes, Sampson’s silver 2019 Toyota Camry careened out of control on the 1500 block of East 7th Avenue, slamming into a crowd gathered outside the popular Ybor nightlife spot.
Three people died instantly at the scene, and a fourth succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Witnesses described scenes of chaos and heartbreak as bystanders and first responders rushed to help the wounded amid shattered glass and twisted debris scattered across the street.
Police arrested Sampson, a resident of Dade City with no prior major criminal record. He now faces multiple felony charges, including four counts of vehicular homicide and four counts of aggravated fleeing or eluding with serious injury or death. He remains held without bond at the Hillsborough County Jail.
Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw condemned the crash as “a senseless tragedy,” warning that reckless driving and street racing continue to endanger lives across Florida. “One split-second decision can destroy families and communities,” Bercaw said in a statement. “This is a reminder of how quickly joy can turn to sorrow when the rules of the road are ignored.”
While investigators confirmed 11 victims were hospitalized, reports indicate that additional individuals may have sought treatment independently. Officials emphasized that the crash was the result of reckless driving and not a targeted attack.
As the community mourns the victims, many are calling for stricter penalties on illegal street racing and reckless driving — a growing menace that continues to claim innocent lives on Florida’s roads.
