Boro Park Shomrim and NYPD Take Down Professional Theft Crew
On July 29, business owners along 13th Avenue in Boro Park contacted local Shomrim after falling victim to an identical scam. Two individuals entered multiple stores seeking expensive electronics and claimed they would pay via Zelle. Store owners soon received what appeared to be legitimate payment confirmation texts and emails. The messages were fake, allowing the suspects to walk away with the merchandise before the fraud was discovered.
As more reports came in, Boro Park Shomrim quickly identified a clear pattern and assembled a coordinated response team. Investigators learned the suspects planned to return for additional goods. Volunteers positioned themselves throughout the area, maintained constant observation, and worked in real time with the NYPD. When the suspects arrived at the meeting location, officers moved in to stop their vehicle.
Instead of surrendering, the suspects fled recklessly, striking multiple vehicles in the process. A citywide alert was issued to Shomrim groups across New York City with descriptions of the pair and their car. Crown Heights Shomrim members soon spotted the vehicle, kept visual contact, and relayed updates to police. The NYPD’s 73rd Precinct Crime Team, supported by the Aviation Unit, closed in as the suspects abandoned their vehicle and barricaded themselves inside an apartment building. Officers established a perimeter and took both individuals into custody without further incident.
