A jaw-dropping crash at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Missouri has racing fans and spectators still talking, after a boat traveling at a blistering 213 mph went airborne moments after crossing the finish line. The vessel, named "Dirty Duck," was competing in the 38th annual Shootout, a two-day event that draws thousands of spectator boats to watch powerboats race down a measured three-quarter-mile stretch of the lake in pursuit of the fastest recorded speed. As the boat crossed the line, its bow lifted off the water, sending the 40-foot catamaran into a violent flip that saw it rotate multiple times through the air before slamming back down into the lake. Remarkably, after all that chaos, the boat came to rest upright in the water.

The driver, identified as Adam Seraphine, suffered a broken leg in the crash and was rushed into surgery shortly afterward, while throttleman Rusty Williams walked away without serious injury, though reportedly a bit sore in the aftermath. A rescue team was on the scene within seconds of the crash, a response time organizers credited to strict safety protocols that mirror those used in major motorsports like NASCAR. In fact, closed-canopy racers competing in the event had completed underwater escape training just one day before the crash occurred, underscoring how seriously the sport takes the risks that come with pushing boats to such extreme speeds. Even the rescue effort came with its own bump in the road, as one member of the response team suffered a leg injury requiring stitches while helping extract the crew.

Despite the violence of the crash, the run still counted toward the competition, and Dirty Duck's 213 mph pass was enough to earn the boat a spot near the top of the day's rankings. A roughly 19-second video capturing the entire sequence has circulated widely online, showing the boat launching off the water, flipping vertically several times in a dramatic arc, and crashing down amid a massive spray of white water near the shoreline. Bystanders watching from nearby pontoon boats can be seen reacting in real time, throwing their arms up in shock as the crash unfolded just yards away from the flotilla of spectator vessels lining the course. The dramatic footage has quickly become one of the most talked-about moments from this year's Shootout.

Crashes, while jarring to witness, are not entirely uncommon at events like the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, where boats regularly push past 200 mph in pursuit of bragging rights and the event's coveted "Top Gun" title. Organizers emphasized that the incident, while dramatic, ultimately validated the extensive safety measures built into the event, from boat design to crew training to rapid-response rescue teams stationed along the course. As for the Dirty Duck team, reports indicate Williams was already pushing to get medically cleared in time to return for the following day's competition, a testament to the resilience, and perhaps the sheer nerve, that defines high-speed powerboat racing.
