Russiaโ€™s Northern Fleet has conducted a military exercise in the Arctic designed to simulate the defense of strategic military installations against an attempted enemy assault. The drill, reported on October 22, 2026, took place on Alexandra Land in the Franz Josef Land archipelago, where Russian forces practiced responding to a simulated hostile naval force attempting to seize military infrastructure. Footage shows soldiers operating in severe winter conditions, with all-terrain vehicles advancing through snow and personnel in Arctic combat gear preparing for defensive operations. The exercise involved Bastion coastal missile systems, naval helicopters, ground troops and mobile teams trained to counter unmanned aerial vehicles. According to the Russian military, the scenario included simulated missile launches against an opposing naval formation approximately 350 kilometers away, followed by an operation to repel troops who managed to land on the island.

A Ka-29 naval helicopter also transported a specialized team to the island to engage the simulated landing force, while mobile units practiced responding to drone threats and evacuating a wounded soldier. Russian officials said the exercise continued despite heavy snowfall and storm-force winds reaching 30 meters per second, conditions that tested personnel and equipment in one of the country's most challenging operating environments. The drill reflects Moscowโ€™s continued emphasis on protecting remote Arctic military bases and securing access to strategically important northern waters, including the Northern Sea Route, a shipping corridor whose commercial and military significance is growing. Russia has expanded its military infrastructure across the Arctic over the past decade as competition over regional access, maritime routes and natural resources has intensified. Although the exercise was presented as a defensive scenario, its use of coastal missile systems, helicopter-deployed troops and counter-drone units demonstrates the range of capabilities Russia is training to employ in a potential Arctic conflict.
