Albaniaโ€™s capital, Tirana, has descended into violent clashes as anti-government demonstrations entered their fifth consecutive day on October 17, with protesters launching fireworks, throwing rocks and petrol bombs at police officers. The confrontations intensified near government buildings as masked demonstrators faced riot police, who responded with tear gas, water cannons and other crowd-control measures. What began as a growing wave of public anger has escalated into a major challenge for Prime Minister Edi Rama, with fires, damaged property and street battles adding to the turmoil. Thousands of young Albanians have joined the demonstrations, expressing frustration over corruption, limited job opportunities, rising education costs and poor university conditions. The unrest has also spread beyond Tirana, raising concerns about the countryโ€™s ability to contain the violence as demands for political change grow louder.

The latest clashes are unfolding against the backdrop of the so-called โ€œFlamingo Revolution,โ€ a protest movement initially fueled by opposition to a controversial luxury resort development on Albaniaโ€™s southern coast linked to an investment firm founded by Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trumpโ€™s son-in-law. Student demonstrations have broadened the movement into a wider campaign against the government, with some protesters demanding Ramaโ€™s resignation after years of mounting frustration. Authorities have reported arrests and injuries, while police and demonstrators have faced growing risks as confrontations intensify. The government has condemned the violence, while Rama has rejected calls to step down and accused political opponents of exploiting the unrest. With fireworks and other projectiles being used against police, the crisis now presents a difficult test for public order and political stability in Albania. Whether the demonstrations will force meaningful government concessions or trigger further confrontations remains uncertain.
