A Ukrainian Mi-8 helicopter crew successfully intercepted and destroyed a Russian “Geran” kamikaze drone during an air defense mission, Ukrainian military officials confirmed.

The interception highlights Ukraine’s growing ability to counter Russia’s persistent drone assaults, which have targeted infrastructure and frontline positions across the country. The Mi-8’s engagement marks one of the few documented instances of a helicopter neutralizing a loitering munition mid-flight—a complex maneuver requiring precise coordination and rapid response.

Ukrainian commanders praised the crew’s effectiveness, saying such actions demonstrate the country’s continued adaptation and resilience amid ongoing Russian strikes. The “Geran” drones—Russia’s rebranded version of Iran’s Shahed-series unmanned systems—have been central to Moscow’s long-range attack strategy.
