A South Korean rocket exploded during launch early Tuesday at Brazil’s Alcântara Space Center, ending in a dramatic failure but remaining within the designated safety zone with no reported injuries. The mission, conducted by South Korea’s Innospace, aimed to place eight payloads, including Brazilian and Indian satellites, into orbit.

The two-stage HANBIT-Nano vehicle successfully passed Max-Q, the point of maximum aerodynamic pressure, before a likely first-stage failure caused the rocket to crash at T+1:13. The incident followed three prior launch scrubs and came after a successful prototype test in 2023, highlighting the challenges faced by emerging space companies.

Despite the setback, Innospace engineers confirmed that the crash occurred safely within the preplanned exclusion zone, preventing harm to personnel and infrastructure. The company is now reviewing telemetry and launch data to identify the cause of the failure and determine necessary corrections for future attempts.

Financial markets reacted swiftly, with Innospace’s shares falling 24% in response to the failure, underscoring the high-risk nature of early-stage space ventures. Analysts note that such setbacks are common among new aerospace startups, citing early challenges faced by companies like SpaceX before achieving operational reliability.

The failure serves as a reminder of the technical complexity inherent in orbital launches, as Innospace continues its efforts to establish a competitive presence in the global small satellite launch market. The company has expressed commitment to learning from the incident and resuming attempts to deploy payloads successfully in upcoming missions.
