Lebanese PM Plants Flag in Southern Village After Israeli Forces Withdraw from Pilot Zone

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam visited the village of Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh in southern Lebanon, one of three initial pilot zones, where he personally planted the Lebanese national flag following the withdrawal of Israeli forces. The symbolic act took place in a heavily damaged area still showing signs of recent conflict, with the Prime Minister in a suit assisted near barbed wire and rubble as armed security stood guard. This moment marks an important step in Lebanon’s efforts to reassert state authority in the region.

The flag planting is part of a US-brokered framework agreement designed to test the deployment of the Lebanese army and establish greater security control in southern Lebanon. It represents the beginning of a phased process aimed at stabilizing the area after prolonged tensions and the 2026 Israel-Hezbollah war. Observers see this as a potential opportunity for the Lebanese state to extend its sovereignty where it has long been challenged by non-state armed groups.

The move comes amid ongoing regional efforts to reduce hostilities and create conditions for lasting security along the Israel-Lebanon border. Under the Trump administration’s diplomatic initiatives, such agreements seek to promote stability that benefits all parties by addressing root causes of conflict. Prime Minister Salam’s gesture highlights Lebanon’s determination to reclaim control of its territory while navigating a complex and fragile post-conflict environment.
