Passengers aboard an El Al flight from Eretz Yisroel to Newark faced an unexpected Erev Shabbos emergency after a pilot reportedly became ill during the transatlantic journey, forcing the aircraft to make an unscheduled landing in Paris.

El Al Flight LY27, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner traveling from Ben Gurion Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport, was diverted to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport on Friday, October 23, after a member of the flight crew experienced a medical emergency.

According to Israeli aviation reports, the affected crew member was a pilot. The aircraft landed safely in Paris at approximately 5:30 a.m. local time.

Although the emergency landing was completed without a reported incident involving the aircraft, the diversion created a significant challenge for passengers hoping to reach their destinations before Shabbos.

With limited time remaining before Shabbos, El Al began arranging alternative travel options and accommodations for those unable to continue their journeys.

Some passengers were offered alternative flights, while others were provided with hotel accommodations near the airport and arrangements to observe Shabbos in Paris.

The situation also prompted assistance from the local Chabad community.

According to COLlive, arrangements were made for a Chabad rav to join the stranded passengers at their hotel, where kosher meals and a designated area for davening were prepared.

The efforts helped ensure that frum travelers unexpectedly spending Shabbos in France would have access to essential Shabbos provisions despite the sudden disruption to their plans.

The incident drew attention throughout the Jewish travel community, particularly because of the challenges that can arise when international flights are delayed or diverted shortly before Shabbos.

For passengers who had expected to arrive in the United States on Friday, the unexpected stop in Paris meant quickly adjusting their travel plans and preparing to spend Shabbos far from their intended destinations.

El Al reportedly scheduled a replacement flight for Motzoei Shabbos to allow affected passengers to continue their journeys.

A subsequent report indicated that the replacement flight departed Paris after Shabbos. However, its precise arrival time in Newark and the final travel arrangements of all affected passengers have not been independently confirmed.

The medical condition of the pilot was not publicly detailed in the reports reviewed.

Despite the disruption, the response highlighted the importance of community assistance for Jewish travelers facing unexpected circumstances, especially as Shabbos approaches.
