Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has delivered a sharp response to Britain’s shifting position on Israel, sarcastically suggesting the United Kingdom could be called the “Islamic Republic of Britain.” In a recent podcast interview, Netanyahu referenced concerns over growing Islamist influence in the UK while making clear that Israel is determined to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed Islamic republic. The remarks came as British Prime Minister Andy Burnham signaled a tougher approach toward Israel, including criticism of past Gaza policy and calls for additional measures. Netanyahu left no doubt about where he stands.

The Israeli leader’s comments directly addressed the changing tone in London. Burnham has indicated support for stronger sanctions and a ban on goods from West Bank settlements, marking a notable departure from previous British positions. Netanyahu framed the broader issue as one of national survival and regional security, stressing that Israel will not allow Iran to cross the nuclear threshold. His reference to Britain served as a pointed critique of what he views as dangerous internal trends in Western countries.

The exchange highlights deepening tensions between Israel and parts of Europe over the conflict and its aftermath. Netanyahu’s message reinforced Israel’s long-standing red line on a nuclear Iran while pushing back against what he sees as misguided pressure from traditional allies. As diplomatic strains continue, the Israeli government remains focused on protecting its security interests and countering threats from the Iranian regime. The strong language underscores the seriousness with which Jerusalem views both the Iranian nuclear challenge and shifting attitudes among some Western partners.
