RECOVERY MILESTONE: SpaceX Recovers Vehicle After 24-Day Ocean Ordeal.
SpaceX has guided its Starship test vehicle to calmer waters just off Christmas Island after an extraordinary recovery effort that kept the spacecraft afloat for approximately 24 days. The vehicle, known as Ship 40 from Starship Flight 13, survived its July 24 test flight and subsequent splashdown in the Indian Ocean, marking the first time a Starship upper stage has remained intact after an ocean landing. The recovery now gives SpaceX an unusual opportunity to examine the vehicle up close after its flight and weeks at sea.
Images and video released during the recovery show the stainless-steel spacecraft still floating despite the harsh conditions, with heat-shield tiles and visible signs of exposure from the flight and time in the ocean. The 52-meter vehicle was difficult to tow because of rough seas and its unusual shape, forcing recovery crews to move slowly toward the island. After reaching the area near Christmas Island, the spacecraft is now in significantly calmer water where engineers can work more safely.
SpaceX engineers are traveling to the site to conduct additional inspections and analysis before the company attempts the next stage of the recovery. Engineers are expected to study areas including the heat shield and other vehicle systems, potentially providing valuable data on how Starship performed during atmospheric reentry and how its structure held up after the unexpected ocean landing. The findings could become especially important as SpaceX continues developing Starship toward its long-term goal of rapid and full reusability.
The next challenge is getting Ship 40 back to Starbase in Texas, and SpaceX has not announced a final timetable or method for that journey. The recovery itself represents a significant step beyond simply locating a test vehicle at sea: crews have demonstrated that a large Starship can be secured, towed and brought into safer waters after surviving a splashdown. What happens next could reveal just how much information SpaceX can extract from a spacecraft that unexpectedly survived an ocean landing and spent nearly a month exposed to the sea.
