HORMUZ SHOWDOWN ESCALATES: IRGC Claims Third Tanker Strike As UKMTO Reports Attacks
Iranian-aligned media have published a video produced by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that purports to show a tanker with smoke rising near its superstructure after it "exploded" in the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC says the ship was on what it calls an "unauthorized route" and describes it as the third vessel struck today, but it offers no further details. The background may be the coast of Oman, yet the location, date, and identity of the ship cannot be confirmed from the short clip. The IRGC attributes its claimed strikes to sea mines, a claim U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) says is false.
Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Center has reported two incidents in the last 24 hours. In one, a small boat attached two explosive devices to a tanker's hull about 25 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, causing an engine room fire. Reuters, citing maritime security sources, identified the tanker as the Panama-flagged Louise 1 and said the devices were limpet mines. It remains unclear whether the IRGC's claimed strikes and the UKMTO-reported incidents involve the same vessels, so the competing accounts have yet to be reconciled. With the world's most important oil chokepoint at the center of it, the key questions are who is behind the attacks and what each side's claims will mean for shipping.
