A senior Israeli military official has warned that Israel’s ongoing confrontation with Iran is not simply a regional conflict but part of a broader effort to prevent a growing global threat. In a televised interview, Israel Defense Forces Brigadier General Effie Defrin explained that Israel’s military actions are aimed at countering Iran’s expanding network of influence, missile capabilities, and support for militant groups operating across multiple continents.
Speaking during an interview with CBS Evening News, Defrin described the current campaign against Iran as a necessary step to prevent wider instability that could extend far beyond the Middle East. According to the Israeli general, Tehran’s strategy over the past several years has focused on building an interconnected network of proxy forces and expanding long-range missile capabilities that could threaten not only Israel but also Europe and other regions.
Defrin emphasized that Iran’s activities have already had a global impact. He pointed to the role of Iranian-backed groups in disrupting key international shipping routes, particularly through attacks carried out by Houthi militants targeting vessels near the Red Sea. Those attacks have significantly affected global trade flows, contributing to a dramatic drop in shipping traffic through the Suez Canal—one of the world’s most important maritime corridors. Such disruptions, he argued, demonstrate that Iran’s influence is capable of creating economic consequences far beyond the immediate conflict zone.
The general also highlighted Iran’s longstanding support for militant organizations operating throughout the Middle East and beyond. According to Defrin, these networks have been responsible for numerous attacks against civilian and military targets across several regions. He warned that Iran’s continued expansion of these proxy relationships allows it to exert influence and conduct indirect operations against adversaries without engaging in direct warfare.
Israel’s military campaign against Iranian targets began in late February as part of a coordinated effort involving U.S. and Israeli forces aimed at degrading Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure. The operation has since escalated into a broader conflict that has seen missile exchanges, drone attacks, and strikes across multiple locations. Iranian weapons systems and proxy groups have reportedly targeted numerous countries in the region, highlighting the increasingly complex and international nature of the confrontation.
