The demonstrations were amplified by public outrage after a federal ICE agent in Minneapolis shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen, during an enforcement action on January 7. Good’s death has sparked a national debate, with federal authorities asserting the agent acted in self-defense amid what they described as a dangerous encounter, while some local officials and protesters dispute that narrative based on available video footage.

In Los Angeles, while the vast majority of demonstrators voiced their opposition without violence, law enforcement officers with the Los Angeles Police Department made a number of arrests outside a detention facility as tensions briefly escalated. Minnesota officials and civil liberties advocates have pressed for thorough and transparent investigations into the incident, while federal authorities have maintained that the agent responded to a perceived imminent threat during the operation.
