Cybersecurity expert Kurt Knutsson has issued a warning to parents about the growing risks associated with children using online gaming platforms such as Roblox, which has evolved beyond a game into a full-fledged social platform. His warning comes in the wake of a February 2, 2026 incident in Florida, where two sisters, ages 12 and 14, were allegedly abducted after connecting with a kidnapper through the platform.
Knutsson explained that platforms like Roblox can create an environment where predators employ grooming tactics, often building trust gradually over weeks before attempting to manipulate or abduct vulnerable children. He stressed that parents must remain vigilant, as these interactions can occur through in-game chats, private messages, or voice communications that may seem harmless at first.
To protect children, Knutsson recommends several practical safeguards. These include disabling direct messaging and voice chat options with strangers, maintaining a strict "no secrets" policy regarding online interactions, and fostering open communication about the warning signs of grooming behavior. He emphasized the importance of teaching children to recognize manipulative tactics, such as slow trust-building and subtle coercion, while encouraging them to report any uncomfortable exchanges immediately.
The expert cautions that while gaming platforms offer social and educational benefits, the increasing sophistication of online predators requires proactive parental involvement. By implementing safeguards and maintaining ongoing dialogue, parents can reduce the risks of exploitation and help ensure their children enjoy safe online experiences.
