BNEI BRAK, ISRAEL — In a rare and meaningful encounter, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee met with HaGaon HaRav Dov Landau, a senior rabbinic authority in the Haredi Jewish community, during a visit to the ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak.
Ambassador Huckabee, known for his deep Christian faith and longstanding support of Israel, expressed respect and admiration for the role of Torah study, even when juxtaposed with the country’s strong emphasis on military service. He praised the cultural and spiritual discipline maintained by Israel’s Haredi sector, noting that “religious devotion and national service can both serve the soul of a nation.”
His remarks aimed to bridge the often complex relationship between faith-based communities and civic duties, a topic that frequently sparks debate within Israeli society.
In response, Rav Dov Landau, one of the most respected Torah scholars in the world, welcomed the ambassador’s comments. With a thoughtful tone, he remarked, “If only many Jews thought like that,” alluding to internal tensions in Israel over the obligations of yeshiva students and their exemption from military service.
The meeting reflected an effort to deepen cultural dialogue between American diplomacy and Israeli religious leadership at a time when questions of identity, duty, and community remain at the forefront of national discussions in both countries.
Huckabee’s visit to Bnei Brak marks an important moment of mutual recognition and respect, emphasizing how diplomacy can also take place in study halls and synagogues — not just conference rooms.
