A dramatic video has been released showing the moment a heroic police officer stopped a samurai sword attacker during a brutal rampage in east London.
The incident unfolded in April 2024, when 36-year-old Marcus Monzo launched a frenzied attack in Hainault. After using his van to hit a pedestrian and crashing into a house, Monzo went on to randomly target members of the public with a samurai sword. Among his victims was 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin, who was killed in a senseless attack while walking to school.
Police officers from London’s Metropolitan Police arrived with little information but immediately confronted Monzo to protect bystanders. Inspector Campbell, one of the first responders, described the life-threatening confrontation and the injuries he sustained as he and his colleagues fought to subdue the attacker.
Bodycam and witness footage shows Campbell striking Monzo with his police baton as colleagues used incapacitant spray. When Monzo attempted to escape through gardens and alleyways, officers deployed a Taser and managed to arrest him.
Monzo has since been convicted of murder, attempted murder, and multiple serious offences. He was sentenced to a minimum of 40 years in prison.
Police officials praised the bravery of all officers involved, highlighting their commitment to protecting the public even at great personal risk. The Metropolitan Police said the case is a stark reminder of the dangers officers face every day in service of the community.
