A 150-foot-tall bridge that was part of Germany’s Autobahn system was demolished on Sunday, January 25, to make way for a wider overpass designed to handle modern traffic demands. The Sterbecke Valley Bridge in Schalksmuhle, North Rhine–Westphalia, which had stood since 1967, was brought down as part of an infrastructure upgrade along the A45 motorway.

Video footage captured by Jan Schroth, also known online as AbbruchSchrotti, shows the bridge collapsing from multiple angles in a controlled demolition, providing a dramatic view of the structure’s fall. Thousands of tons of concrete and steel debris were cleared in preparation for construction of the replacement bridge.

Autobahn officials noted that the new bridge will accommodate a traffic volume of 64,000 vehicles daily, including 13,000 trucks—a significant increase compared to the original design. The old Sterbecke Valley Bridge was built in the 1960s based on traffic forecasts predicting 25,000 vehicles per day by 1980, far below today’s demands.

The demolition marks a key milestone in Germany’s ongoing efforts to modernize its Autobahn network, ensuring that vital roadways meet safety and capacity requirements for the 21st century.
