Howard Lutnick delivered strong remarks on U.S.-Canada trade relations, urging Canada to open its markets or face economic consequences.
“Canada is not open to us. They need to open their market,” Lutnick stated. He emphasized that unless Canadian trade barriers are addressed, tariffs may be the necessary response: “Unless they're willing to open their market, they're going to pay a tariff.”
Lutnick went on to express support for the Biden administration’s approach to trade policy, suggesting that firm action could unlock significant benefits for the U.S. economy. “I think the President is going to open between $300–$400 billion of opportunity for Americans,” he added, referring to potential new business and export avenues if fairer trade terms are enforced.
The comments reflect a growing sentiment among American business leaders advocating for more assertive trade policies, especially in sectors where U.S. goods face foreign restrictions. While no specific Canadian industries were named, the broader message is clear: Washington may soon ramp up economic pressure on Ottawa if perceived trade imbalances continue.
Officials from both countries have not commented on Lutnick’s statement, but trade analysts expect negotiations or policy responses in the near future.
