BALTIMORE, MD — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Baltimore have arrested Abraham Berhanu Taddasse, an Ethiopian national, who was previously convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for assault.
According to ICE officials, Taddasse had been charged with first- and second-degree assault, along with assault and indecent exposure in a violent case that drew community concern. After serving time in the Maryland state system, ICE took custody of Taddasse for removal proceedings, as part of the agency’s effort to identify and deport non-citizens with serious criminal records.
“This arrest reflects ICE’s commitment to public safety,” said an ICE spokesperson. “Individuals who commit serious crimes and violate the trust of their host communities will be held accountable.”
The arrest underscores ongoing efforts by immigration authorities to prioritize the removal of non-citizens involved in violent or assault offenses, particularly those who pose a threat to public safety.
ICE stated that Taddasse will remain in custody pending the outcome of his immigration case, which may result in deportation to Ethiopia.
