A high-speed passenger train collided with a truck loaded with pears at a secured level crossing in Meteren, Netherlands, on Friday morning, injuring five people and halting train services through the region.
The dramatic incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. when the truck driver misjudged a left turn and became stranded on the tracks as the crossing barriers descended. Moments later, the oncoming train struck the vehicle at full speed, tearing apart the truck’s cab and scattering pears and debris across the site.
Dutch railway operator ProRail confirmed that five people sustained minor injuries in the crash, but fortunately, no fatalities were reported. The truck driver survived, though the vehicle was completely destroyed in the collision.
Train services between Geldermalsen and ’s-Hertogenbosch were immediately suspended and are expected to remain disrupted through the weekend as crews work to clear debris and assess damage to the track and crossing systems.
ProRail issued a renewed safety advisory urging all truck and vehicle drivers to drive through crossing barriers if they become trapped on the tracks rather than attempting to reverse. “It’s better to break a barrier than to risk lives,” a ProRail spokesperson said.
Footage of the collision, captured on camera, shows the sheer force of the impact, sending the truck’s cargo flying across the area. The video has since gone viral, reigniting debate over level-crossing safety in the Netherlands.
Authorities have opened an investigation into the incident, while emergency services commended the swift response that prevented more serious injuries.
