An 89-year-old man was rescued after a large apartment fire broke out in Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, on Saturday afternoon, leaving him seriously injured and several others displaced.

The blaze started around 3:30 p.m. on the second floor of a building on 91st Street. Witnesses described flames shooting from windows as neighbors feared for the elderly resident’s life.

“I thought he wasn’t going to make it,” said neighbor Adriana Dickson, recalling the tense moments before firefighters reached the man. “But when I heard they got him out on a stretcher, I was so relieved. That was scary.”

The victim, who neighbors say is a veteran known for blasting the National Anthem from his window each afternoon, was rushed to Staten Island University North in serious condition after medics provided immediate treatment at the scene.

“He has a walker, and it’s hard for him to get up and down the stairs,” said another neighbor, Denis Kaver, underscoring the challenges firefighters faced in the rescue.
