At least eight oceanfront homes have collapsed into the sea along North Carolina’s Outer Banks, as powerful swells from Hurricane Imelda continue to erode the coastline.

According to the National Park Service (NPS), the latest collapses occurred near Buxton and Rodanthe, where storm-driven waves and rising tides have undermined the foundations of several seaside properties. Dramatic footage shows homes crumbling into the surf as debris spreads across the shoreline.

“Further collapses are possible in Buxton and Rodanthe,” the NPS warned, urging residents and visitors to avoid unstable structures and exercise caution near the water. Cleanup crews are now working to remove wreckage and assess environmental hazards caused by the debris.

Hurricane Imelda has intensified coastal erosion throughout the Outer Banks, an area already vulnerable to severe storms and sea-level rise. Officials say more structures could be at risk if the high surf continues in the coming days.
