China’s navy has released new footage showing a Type 055 guided-missile destroyer launching a YJ-20 hypersonic anti-ship missile, highlighting a growing long-range strike capability designed to challenge advanced naval defenses. The video captures the vertical launch sequence at sea, with the canister opening, ignition, and rapid ascent of the missile amid heavy smoke plumes.

The YJ-20, publicly unveiled during China’s September 2025 V-Day parade, is described as an aeroballistic hypersonic missile capable of traveling at speeds beyond Mach 6, with some reports placing its top speed near Mach 10. The weapon is believed to have a range exceeding 1,000 kilometers, potentially reaching up to 1,500 kilometers, and is designed to strike large surface vessels such as aircraft carriers.

Defense analysts note that the missile’s speed, maneuverability, and flight profile are intended to complicate interception by existing air- and missile-defense systems. Its reported 400-kilogram warhead further underscores its role as a high-impact maritime strike weapon.

The launch platform, China’s Type 055 destroyer, is considered one of the most advanced surface combatants in the world, equipped with extensive vertical launch systems and integrated air and missile defense capabilities. By pairing the YJ-20 with the Type 055, Beijing is signaling an emphasis on long-range maritime deterrence and power projection.
