President Donald Trump has sounded the alarm over what he calls a “shocking and unacceptable” rise in violent crime in Washington, D.C., citing numbers that paint a grim picture of the nation’s capital.
Speaking during a recent address, Trump claimed, “The murder rate in Washington today is higher than that of Bogotá, Colombia.” He went on to note that the number of car thefts in D.C. has doubled in the past five years, while carjackings have more than tripled.
The remarks come on the heels of Trump’s announcement that he will invoke the D.C. Home Rule Act to place the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control and deploy the National Guard. Supporters argue that the drastic action is necessary to restore safety, while opponents say the statistics are being used to justify an unprecedented power grab.
According to crime analysts, the capital has indeed seen a significant rise in violent offenses in recent years, though comparisons to international cities remain a point of contention among experts. Still, the figures underscore the mounting pressure on D.C. officials to address public safety concerns.
