Smoke rose over Gaza City on Saturday as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) escalated airstrikes against Hamas strongholds, part of a sweeping military operation aimed at dismantling the terror group’s grip on the enclave.
Tens of thousands of Palestinians have begun evacuating Gaza City as Israel prepares the ground for what officials describe as a decisive campaign to stamp out Hamas. The operation, expected to culminate in a full-scale takeover by mid-September, includes efforts to move more than 1 million civilians out of combat zones to minimize casualties.
Israeli leaders have framed the offensive as both a military necessity and a humanitarian effort, arguing that Hamas embeds itself among civilians, using neighborhoods, hospitals, and schools as shields for its fighters and weapons stockpiles. By clearing the area, the IDF says it can target Hamas infrastructure directly while giving civilians the chance to flee to safer zones.
Reports also suggest that Israel may restrict humanitarian aid shipments into Gaza temporarily to ensure resources are not diverted to Hamas fighters. Officials stress, however, that Israel’s objective remains focused on destroying Hamas’ military capability and securing long-term safety for both Israelis and Palestinians who have suffered under the group’s control.
Military analysts say the operation reflects Israel’s determination to end Hamas’ ability to wage war and prevent future terror attacks, even if it requires unprecedented urban warfare in Gaza City. For Israel, the campaign is not only about defeating Hamas but also about reshaping the security landscape of the region.
