Dramatic video from Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, shows a police officer using his squad car to push a burning vehicle away from gas pumps, preventing what could have become a catastrophic explosion.

The incident occurred at a local gas station when an electric vehicle caught fire while parked near the pumps. With flames rapidly intensifying and the risk of ignition spreading to nearby fuel infrastructure, a responding police officer made the split-second decision to use his cruiser to physically push the burning vehicle to a safer distance.

At the time of the fire, the driver of the vehicle was inside the gas station and was able to exit safely. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Electric vehicle fires present unique challenges due to lithium-ion battery involvement, which can cause fires to burn hotter, longer, and more unpredictably than traditional gasoline-powered vehicle fires. Firefighters responding to the scene reportedly required tens of thousands of gallons of water to suppress the blaze, far exceeding what is typically needed for conventional car fires.

Authorities praised the officer’s quick judgment and decisive action, noting that moving the burning vehicle away from the gas pumps significantly reduced the risk of a larger fire or explosion that could have endangered customers, employees, and first responders.

The incident highlights both the evolving risks associated with electric vehicle battery fires and the critical role of rapid decision-making by law enforcement during emergencies.
