An official investigation has concluded that a Missouri police chief’s lit cigarette caused a devastating fire that destroyed a local nursing home last summer, forcing the evacuation of all residents and resulting in the total loss of the facility.

The fire broke out in the early morning hours of August 7, 2025, at the Vienna Point residential care facility. Images released by the Vienna Fire Protection District show intense flames ripping through the roof of the building as thick smoke poured into the night sky.

Fire crews initially attempted an aggressive interior attack despite heavy fire conditions. However, officials said limited water supply and the rapid spread of the blaze forced a shift to a defensive strategy. Mutual aid tankers and additional manpower were requested as firefighters worked to prevent the fire from spreading further.

Despite the severity of the blaze, first responders were able to evacuate all residents and staff safely. No injuries or fatalities were reported, though the structure itself could not be saved and was declared a total loss.

The investigative report determined that the fire originated from a lit cigarette discarded by the local police chief, igniting combustible materials and quickly overwhelming the building. Authorities did not indicate whether criminal charges would be filed, but the findings raise serious concerns about accountability and fire safety, particularly in facilities housing vulnerable populations.

The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of fire prevention practices at residential care facilities and has sparked community outrage over the circumstances that led to the destruction of a home for elderly residents.
