Newly released footage has revealed the terrifying moment a chainsaw-wielding attacker chased a police officer down a street in Paisley, Scotland, in an incident a judge later described as resembling a “horror film.” The attack occurred in May 2024 and has since resulted in a lengthy prison sentence for the perpetrator.
The footage shows Liridon Kastrati, 32, attempting to murder Police Constable Gary Cowan after crashing his vehicle into a police car. Court testimony revealed that Kastrati initially fled the scene on foot before returning to his vehicle, opening the boot, and retrieving a chainsaw. He then began revving the chainsaw before pursuing the officer down a residential street.
Judge Gallacher detailed how Pc Cowan ran for his life as Kastrati chased him, fearing the attacker would “chop off his limbs” if he caught up. The judge emphasized the extreme danger of the situation, noting that the officer was unarmed and vulnerable while being pursued by a man wielding a running chainsaw.
The attack ended without the officer being physically harmed, but the psychological impact and threat to life were described as severe. The judge highlighted the calculated nature of the assault, pointing to Kastrati’s decision to retrieve the weapon and deliberately pursue the officer rather than flee.
On Tuesday, January 20, Kastrati was sentenced to 10 years in prison at the High Court in Glasgow. The case has reignited discussions in the UK about violent crime, officer safety, and the growing risks faced by law enforcement during routine duties.
The footage has since circulated widely, prompting public outrage and renewed calls for stronger deterrents against attacks on police officers.
