A dramatic near-miss unfolded earlier this week on the BA Expressway when a semi-truck briefly drove in the wrong direction after jackknifing on a snowy shoulder, according to details released by the Tulsa Police Department. Dashcam footage from the semi provides clarity on how the incident occurred and why, despite the alarming circumstances, no one was injured.
The semi was traveling westbound near 129th East Avenue when a Kia began changing lanes, apparently unaware that the truck was occupying the adjacent lane. To avoid a collision, the semi veered onto the snow-covered shoulder. The loss of traction caused the trailer to jackknife, swinging the cab around and leaving the truck facing eastbound—against the normal flow of traffic.
In an effort to safely correct the situation, the driver carefully proceeded eastbound in the wrong direction back to the ramp at 129th East Avenue, where he was able to realign the trailer behind the truck. Authorities confirmed that the maneuver was brief and controlled, and no injuries were reported.
Tulsa police later made contact with the driver of the Kia, who was cooperative and stated they were unaware they had cut off the semi while changing lanes. The driver’s information was documented as part of the incident report.
Police used the incident as a reminder to motorists about the dangers of winter driving, particularly during periods when melting snow refreezes overnight. Slick conditions significantly reduce traction, increasing the risk of jackknifing and other loss-of-control incidents, especially for large commercial vehicles. Authorities are urging drivers to remain alert, use caution when changing lanes, and exercise extra care at night as fluctuating temperatures continue across the Tulsa area.
