NEW YORK — The coastal storm threatening the New York area over Sukkos is becoming clearer, with officials now warning of heavy rain, gusty winds and coastal flooding from Friday through the weekend.

NYC Emergency Management said Thursday morning that it is monitoring the potential for heavy rain from Friday through Sunday and urged residents to prepare for possible street flooding. New Yorkers were advised to clear leaves and debris from nearby catch basins where it can be done safely.

The National Weather Service says the coastal storm is expected to bring rain and gusty winds Friday into the weekend, with the greatest coastal flooding and beach erosion impacts expected Friday and Saturday.

A Coastal Flood Statement is already in effect for Brooklyn and southern Queens from Thursday evening through Friday morning, with up to one foot of flooding possible in vulnerable waterfront areas. Additional advisories may be needed for the Friday evening and Shabbos morning high-tide cycles.

The storm's timing remains a particular concern for the frum community, with Sukkos beginning Friday evening. Families should make necessary preparations for sukkahs, schach, decorations and other loose outdoor items before Yom Tov.

Long Island and other coastal areas are expected to face stronger conditions than much of New York City, while the storm's precise track will determine how much rain and wind reaches individual communities.

Forecasters continue to monitor the system as it approaches the region, and conditions may change as the storm develops.
