A newlywed yeshiva bochur who was arrested by Israeli military police while traveling with his kallah to a Sheva Brachos celebration was released Monday morning, November 2, following widespread outrage in the Chareidi community.
Yaari Lieberman, a talmid of Yeshivas Ohr Hachaim, was detained Sunday over his military service status, just days after his wedding. The arrest reportedly left his kallah deeply distressed, as plainclothes officers took her husband into custody.
Amid the ordeal, Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, rosh yeshiva of Slabodka, personally telephoned the kallah to offer words of chizuk, reassurance, and brachos. Video footage captured Rav Hirsch speaking with her as efforts continued to secure her husband's release.
Shas MK Yinon Azoulay strongly condemned the arrest during an interview on Kol Chai radio, questioning the decision to detain a chosson during his Sheva Brachos. Chareidi lawmakers subsequently pressed military authorities to release him.
The arrest also sparked protests in Yerushalayim and Beit Shemesh.
Following intervention by legal representatives and discussions with military officials, Lieberman's detention was shortened, allowing him to return home to his kallah on Monday morning.
The incident has renewed concerns within the Chareidi community over military draft enforcement against yeshiva bochurim.
